This course promotes mental health as a dynamic construct occurring on a continuum. Students strengthen their knowledge of and appreciation for the interaction of the mind, body, and spirit in psychiatric/mental health nursing as well as all other nursing specialties. The roles of the professional nurse in risk reduction for mental health disorders, health promotion, and recovery are examined in both didactic and clinical settings. Utilizing a health promotion framework and the American Nurses’ Association’s Scope and Standards of Practice, students incorporate theories and frameworks from the liberal arts, sciences, and nursing to apply the nursing process in providing mental health nursing care to individuals, families, groups, and the community. Students learn the role of the baccalaureate nurse on interdisciplinary teams in mental healthcare. Emphasis is on developing therapeutic communication skills and collaborative relationships that support individuals to achieve or return to optimal wellness and function. Prerequisite(s): A minimum grade of "C" NURS 4201 and NURS 4202 and NURS 4203 and NURS 4204. Corequisite(s): NURS 4211.
